ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hana Abreham

Greetings, I am Hana Abreham, the author of "Princess Lwam of Habesha Kingdom." I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and spent my early years in Asmara, Eritrea, until the age of 11. Since then, I have mostly resided in London. The inspiration for my book stemmed from my younger sister, Lwam, for whom the book is named.

One day, when Lwam was 8 years old, she asked me, "Why is there only one black princess on Disney?" At 21, as an adult, I had not even realized the limited representation. That one black princess was Princess Tina, who is specifically African American.

I replied, withholding the complexities from her young mind, emphasizing the importance of representation. Lwam expressed her wish for an African or Habeshan princess, brave and adorned in our traditional clothes, Zuriya. I reassured her that I would write a princess book based on our culture just for her. Originally intended as a private book for my sister, I realized other African girls might share similar desire to see a princess that represents them.

DISNEY INSPIRED

The Concept

The concept emerged from my childhood imagination as a kid that spurred by watching the Pocahontas Disney Princess. Reflecting on Eritrean history, I wished for animated movies to tell our story, akin to Pocahontas. Combining my sister's influence and my childhood imagination, I created "Princess Lwam of Habesha Kingdom."

The book celebrates royal lineage, leadership, culture, heritage, traditions, and friendships, with a focus on the responsibilities of protecting a mighty dynasty. It serves as an inspirational tale about unity, identity, organization, bravery, and history. Through the narrative, young readers learn to respect diversity, embrace their roots, relate to those different from themselves, and find hope and personal growth amid life's uncertainties.
